‘Wolverine 2′ Set To Film In January
This probably should be filed under ‘No Great Surprise,’ but Roger Friedman over at THR’s Showbiz 411 reports that Wolverine 2 is all set to go January 2011. Christopher McQuarrie has finished the script, and Fox is now on the hunt for a director.
Friedman is weirdly cryptic about the story, noting that Wolverine is set to visit Japan but ‘the script is a little different than originally thought.’ I think this only means that it’s different than Friedman was imagining, because he goes on to confirm that it’s based on the Frank Miller and Chris Claremont storyline: ‘Wolverine’s adventures in martial arts will be a love story featuring a Japanese actress, I am told. ‘It’s a beautiful story,’ says a source, ‘and will be very different than the first film.”
I hope it’s different than the first film. I hope it’s actually really, really good. I’ve said numerous times that Miller’s Japan storyline is one of my absolute favorites, and I want to see it done to perfection. Hugh Jackman has been dying to adapt it since the first X-Men film, so I certainly hope he takes it more seriously than he took Weapon X. I don’t want some kind of amnesia katana twist ending that explains away how he doesn’t remember a love of sake and Mariko.
As for directors, who would you like to see? I’m sure I’ll inspire a few groans, but I’d love to see Ang Lee take it on. This film should be Wolverine meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (and yes, I know that’s China over Japan), and I’d love to see Lee tackle comics again. There were some things in Hulk that I quite liked, and I think his approach to character would serve the Old Canucklehead better than it would Bruce Banner.
